Today in the sunshine classes 1,3 and 5 came for the afternoon to the kitchen garden to help out.
Class 1 planted no-dig potatoes under straw. We dug a little into the ground, not very deep but enough to just cover the chitted potato. We then watered the bed and covered the whole area with straw. This it to block out the sunlight so that baby potatoes would not go green. We have located the bed next to the bed with 14 larges pots, where a few weeks ago the Gardening Club members planted one potato per pot in the hope that this will multiply and we have some lovely potatoes in June.
They also harvested some of the Purple sprouting broccoli for the school shop.
Class 5, did most of the harvesting. The most amazing large leeks, more broccoli and the pots of young lettuces were displayed on the picnic table for parents to buy after school.
They were incredibly helpful, sorting out the labels for the school shop and weighing out the produce.
They planted out lettuces in between the broadbeans in the hope that in the next few weeks, we have some delicious mixed lettuce bags.
Class 3, sowed carrots (Nantes 2 and Amsterdam Forcing) as well as beetroot Boltardy in bed 3.
They also sieved some more compost to top us the potato pots planted by the Gardening club last week. Would be great if in July we could have carrots and beetroot as shown below!
